... And More!

Why isn't everything covered by Alberta Health?

Alberta Health covers basic insured eye examinations for eligible patients. Many modern diagnostic technologies that have become an important part of comprehensive eye care are not included in provincial coverage. We use these technologies because they allow us to detect eye disease earlier, monitor changes more accurately, and provide the highest standard of care for our patients.

Coverage & Fees

Alberta Health Coverage

Alberta Health provides coverage for basic insured eye examinations for eligible Albertans. This coverage varies based on age and medical necessity.

Generally, Alberta Health covers routine basic eye exams for:

  • Children and youth (0–18 years)

  • Seniors (65+ years)

For adults aged 19–64, routine eye examinations are generally not insured unless they are medically necessary and meet Alberta Health eligibility requirements, in which case they may be fully or partially covered.

Comprehensive Eye Care & Diagnostic Testing

At Eye Live Powered by Eyes 360, our comprehensive eye examinations go beyond Alberta Health's basic insured exam. We use advanced diagnostic technology to help detect, diagnose, and monitor eye conditions as early as possible, often before symptoms appear.

Because these diagnostic tests are not covered under Alberta Health's basic eye exam, additional fees may apply. The testing recommended for you will depend on your age, eye health, medical history, and your optometrist's clinical findings.

Fees & Insurance

Because every patient's needs are different, the cost of an eye examination can vary depending on the services and diagnostic testing required.

If you have questions about Alberta Health coverage, private insurance benefits, or what your appointment may cost, we encourage you to contact our clinic before your visit.

We're happy to help you understand your coverage and provide an estimate whenever possible.
